Is There a Link Between ADHD and Migraine?

ADHD and migraine are both neurological conditions that affect daily life in different ways.

And while they’re both distinct disorders, research suggests they may be linked…

ADHD commonly impacts focus and impulse control, while migraine involves stabbing head pain, disconnect, sensory sensitivities, and aura (for some of the population).

Based on this information, it may seem odd that these two conditions are related, but once again, understanding the brain can help us understand their relationship…

📖 What Does the Research Say?

A 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis showed a significant correlation between ADHD and migraine symptoms, in both children and adults.

A 2011 Norwegian study found that about one-third of women and 22.5% of men with ADHD also had migraine.

And another study showed a 3x greater rate of migraine symptoms for children and their mothers who are diagnosed with ADHD.

The reason for this overlap is still unclear, but factors like genetics, environment, and hormones may play a role…

🖇️ Why Might ADHD and Migraine Be Connected?

One possible link is stress, a common migraine trigger that is also prevalent in people with ADHD.

ADHD frequently coexists with anxiety and mood disorders, making stress a key factor in both conditions.

Additionally, inconsistent routines—such as poor sleep, irregular meals, and dehydration—are known migraine triggers.

People with ADHD can often struggle with time management, leading to skipped meals and erratic sleep patterns, which can increase migraine frequency and stress…

We also know that these problems are particularly common in ADHD, and hyper focus may cause individuals to forget to eat or hydrate, further raising their risk…

This can also potentially make them more prone to developing migraine symptoms…

Migraine, in turn, may worsen ADHD symptoms by increasing fatigue, reducing concentration, and lowering productivity, creating a cycle where both conditions feed into each other.

While we don’t have enough data to point to the exact mechanisms, the previous points enough of a picture to make us consider their interplay.

💊 Could ADHD Medication Trigger Migraine?

ADHD medications, particularly stimulants, can have side effects like headaches, appetite suppression, and sleep disturbances—all of which may contribute to migraine triggers.

While these effects are usually mild and temporary, they can be enough of a stressor to trigger migraine attacks.

What’s even more confusing is that some research suggests that stimulants may help reduce migraine frequency in certain individuals…

Clearly it’s still too early to tell…

🔗 Managing ADHD and Migraine Together

Why are we bringing this to your attention?

Because the more you know, the better you can take care of yourself…

This also makes it even more apparent about the importance of taking an integrative and holistic approach that considers both conditions to help manage symptoms.

As we’ve previously discussed, improving overall well-being through stress management, structured routines, proper sleep, and balanced nutrition can help reduce the impact of migraine attacks, and most likely, managing ADHD symptoms.

Recognizing the link between ADHD and migraine symptoms will inherently allow for better treatment strategies and improved quality of life for those who struggle with both…

More research is needed, but awareness of their connection is an essential first step…
